On 5th August 2024, Dr. Yvette To, Assistant Professor from PolyU’s Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS), along with her summer intern from NTU, Justin, visited the university’s CAVE immersive environment. The visit was arranged to explore how the cutting-edge technology of the CAVE could be integrated into her upcoming ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) course, scheduled for the next semester.
During the visit, Yvette had an in-depth discussion with Dr. Rodney Chu, our CSD project leader who guided her through the various features and capabilities of the immersive environment. The conversation focused on how the CAVE’s advanced technology could enhance student learning experiences by providing interactive, real-world simulations in a controlled academic setting. This aligns with Yvette’s vision of using innovative tools to enrich the teaching and learning (T&L) process, making it more engaging and impactful for students.
While the primary focus of the visit was to discuss ideas for incorporating immersive technology into her course, Yvette and Justin also had the opportunity to experience the CAVE firsthand. The immersive environment opened up new possibilities for integrating virtual reality and interactive simulations into her course content, offering students a more dynamic way to understand complex ESG concepts. Yvette left the visit with a strong sense of how this technology could transform her teaching approach, and she will now consider how best to bring this immersive experience into her classroom in the coming semester.
Yvette’s visit marks an exciting step towards incorporating immersive technology into APSS’s teaching practices, pushing the boundaries of how ESG topics can be taught through interactive and experiential learning tools. The potential for using the CAVE in future courses reflects the department’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational innovation.
