CSD Supports Students with 360° Video Training for Overseas Attachment Workshop

On May 20, 2023, the CSD team at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University provided technical support for students attending the Overseas Attachment Training Workshop. Led by Dr. Raymond TAM and Miss Elaine CHOW, the workshop aimed to equip APSS students with the skills needed to document their overseas fieldwork using 360° video technology.

The workshop focused on preparing students for the challenge of capturing immersive documentation during their field trips. Through hands-on training, students learned to operate 360° cameras and effectively document their field sites, cultural practices, and social interactions. This immersive approach allows for deeper analysis and a more comprehensive understanding of the fieldwork environment.

In addition to the in-person training, the CSD team developed a series of online VR training modules to further support students. These modules included step-by-step tutorials on 360° video production, interactive simulations for practicing filming techniques, and virtual scenarios to mimic real-world fieldwork conditions. This combination of in-person and online training ensured that students were well-prepared to use the technology in the field.

The 360° video production workshop highlighted practical applications such as conducting interviews with immersive technology and capturing environmental and cultural nuances that traditional filming methods often miss. By reviewing their footage, students could reflect on their fieldwork experiences more deeply and produce nuanced analyses in their assignments.

CSD’s support extended beyond technical training, fostering student-staff partnerships. Student Assistants (SAs) collaborated with CSD staff to develop the online VR content, offering peer-led learning experiences. This collaboration ensured that students received ongoing mentorship and technical guidance while building a community of support.

The 360° VR videos produced during the fieldwork were integral to the students’ final assessments. By integrating immersive technology into their presentations, students demonstrated their ability to document and analyze complex social and cultural contexts effectively.

The CSD team’s efforts to integrate immersive technologies into social sciences education ensure that students are not only technically proficient but also prepared for the unique challenges of modern fieldwork, both locally and globally.
