On April 12, 2023, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of enthusiastic senior secondary school students as part of the PolyU Taster Programme 2023. The programme provided these young learners with an exciting opportunity to experience firsthand what it would be like to study at the Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS), while also exploring the cutting-edge technology that is shaping the future of education.
Immersive Learning with VR Technology
One of the highlights of the visit was a session focused on the application of virtual reality (VR) technology in teaching and learning. The students were introduced to the various ways VR is transforming traditional educational environments, creating immersive learning experiences that engage and inspire. The hands-on demonstration allowed the students to see how VR can be used for simulations, interactive lessons, and virtual environments that enhance understanding and retention.
Roleplay in the Digital Studio
The excitement continued in the Digital Studio (Z221), where students took part in an interview roleplay session. Here, they had the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a professional, simulating real-world scenarios and practicing their communication and presentation skills. The roleplay was designed to give the students a feel for how digital technologies can be used in professional training and development.
Creating Lasting Memories
As part of this immersive experience, each student had the chance to collect video clips of their interview roleplay. These video clips not only served as fun mementos of their time at CSD but also as valuable tools for self-reflection. The students were encouraged to review their performances, identify areas for improvement, and gain confidence in their abilities.
A Preview of What’s to Come
The PolyU Taster Programme 2023 was a fantastic opportunity for senior secondary school students to catch a glimpse of university life and explore the innovative ways technology is being integrated into education. By the end of the visit, the students left with newfound excitement and inspiration for their future academic journeys.
